The words I hear from every single bailout advocate out there suggest that they don't have a clue, either. Actually I think even bailout advocates realize that taking action on these companies is a lesser of the available evils. I have no illusions that the companies can turn themselves around...if it works, it will take a long time. But if we don't bail them at a time of economic crisis we risk even direr consequences through massive job losses or erosion of confidence. I don't think it makes much sense to let them go bankrupt.
