I was working on a roadway in the hills of Camp Pendleton when incoming artillery started raining down on us. It was a case of the artillery outfit not knowing the engineers were working in that area. They were firing on an old building that had been abandoned long before the Marine Corps took over the area. We scrambled for our only walkie-talkie and somehow got hold of someone who called off the attack.
