I think I will try a Lab

With due respect, in my houshold you don't "try" a dog out. A dog is for life, so the choice is a very important one.

You may have a different approach to this, but I have concerns when I read you will "try" a particular dog. I suggest if you get a lab, get one from the Labrador Retriever Rescue League. If it does not work out, they will take the dog back and place it elsewhere.

Very active and strong dogs, but very loyal and obedient if they are trained right. Be sure to take it to puppy school.

The lab is my top pick on your list. If it matters though, they do love water and if it's around they'll be in it. The bird dog I mentioned earlier was the same way.
