Barack Obama's bait and switch is reminiscent of Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry:

The big 3 are in the unenviable position of having manufactured cars, and stimulated the US economy, for many generations. Millions and millions of middle class jobs for families and educations for kids, and a decent retirement for the employees.

One can make that argument.

One can also draw a parallel to the oil business. When gas is too cheap, you would agree that people aren't motivated to find less expensive alternatives, no?

When labor is too expensive (i.e., labor is overpaid for the skills they possess due to the extortion of the labor unions), employees are not motivated to upgrade their skills. Year after year, dads in Detroit say, "Hey, why don't you go apply at the plant? It is a good living, by the time you're 50 you can retire and have 20 years of relative wealth." And their children dutifully abandon the concept of becoming qualified to do something better in favor of a dead-end job that pays well. For now.

With total disregard for the fact that some day (that day is now), their job is going to no longer be viable. That's where we are. The ponzi schme has collapsed. If government bails them out this time it is only a short time until the bailouts can't continue. Then what?

The unions must die. They are a blight on the nation which basically insure that generations from this day forward will be wards of the state.

Not complicated.

I haven't even read the other responses. BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT THE UNIONS IN THE PLANT. Right?
We've got a problem here. The unions have become burdensome. And yet, without them, the rest of us would make Chinaman wages.
And on this board we gotta put up with pinheads who still put GWB on the pedestal, but think they're qualified to diagnose the problem.
So you go for the laughs. LOL.
