The bigger issue is how to restore the company image, get customer mindshare back, build best of breed cars, leverage and maximize development investments, reduce expenses, create a lasting culture of innovation and technology leadership, etc...
all of the things that one does to run a world class company.


These are all feel good items that have marginal impact on the company's ability to survive the current crisis. Eliminating the unions, IF YOU COULD DO IT, would solve the problem overnight.

You can't just say "get rid of the unions" and it's done.

Of course not. That's the problem, you can't get rid of them. Even the bankruptcy court isn't going to "get rid of them" -- it will tone them down substantially, but leave them in place to destroy the companies down the road.
