They are a private, non-profit research organization. You can Google them if you want.

They have already stated that they use other indicators besides negative GDP growth. Ultimately, though, they came to a conclusion based on a conference call by their "cycle dating committee."

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the U.S. economy officially entered a recession in December of 2007.

According to most analysts, recession = 2 or more consecutive quarters of negative growth. What is National Bureau of Economic Research, and what are their criteria?


What does it matter? The country has lost jobs in every month of 2008. Do you honestly think we are not in a recession?
