What I am skeptical about is people making up their definitions not to mention applying it after the fact.

Now, suppose the oil didn't go to $147 (after December 2007), and the bottom fell from under the credit markets for year or 2 years later. That could possibly have meant delay of the recession by a year. Would it have meant that we have entered the recession in December 2007?

This is kind of like retroactive trading. All your trades are profitable...
