I am AWARE that N.B.E.R. is a PRIVATE organization of noted economists.

That is *exactly* the reason that most everyone has regarded their word as the 'official' word for decades now: BECAUSE NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD EVER TRUST A GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY TO BE HONEST ABOUT SUCH AS ASSESSMENT!

All around the world governments (who are *hardly* disinterested observers <G>) lie and fudge and hedge about such things. (Inflation, deficits, recessions... most any bad news.)

Which is why trust is placed in this notable group of private economists --- they are non-partisan, and their methodology is standardized.
