The total of both cash compensation and benefits provided to GM hourly workers in 2006 amounted to approximately $73.26 per active hour worked. This total is made of two main components: cash compensation ($39.68) and benefit/government required programs ($33.58).

Yes, but as we know from the discussion yesterday, they don't count anything but the hourly rate. It doesn't occur to them that the total cost of having an employee is some multiple of the hourly rate.

I can tell you that anyone who has ever been in business and made a payroll understands it, though.

8 hr x $73.26 = $586.08/day

40 hr x 73.26 = $2930.40/wk

52wks x $2930.40 = 152,380.80/yr

Did I do that right?

>>" This is what it was in 2006, according to GM:

"<<

You say $39.68 cash compensation and this is what it is according to the WSJ editorial page on Monday...$28.42 an hour vs $26 for Toyota, $24 for Honda and $21 for Hyundai. And that benefit number you quoted...guess who will pick up those legacy pension costs...I'll give you a "hint: it's a 9 letter word that starts with "T" and ends with "S" "... "<<

And btw, the Tier 2 workers (new hires) as a result of the 2007 contract start out at $15 an hour with no defined pension and the UAW picks up the medical plans for all workers in 2010.

And just to put somethings into perspective... the F35 program could cost $1 Trillion and each F22 costs $300 Million and we are going to get a grand total of 187 of those plus the 21st Century Maginot Line (sometimes known as missile defense) already has cost $150 Bn and it does not even work and guess who is picking up those costs "hint: it's a 9 letter word that starts with "T" and ends with "S "<<

And I will not mention the $12 Bn a month we, yes that nine letter word again, blow each and every month for the last 6 or so years in Iraq creating jobs for Blackwater and other associated 186,000 contractors (sponges?) from the public trough.

And oh btw...the sanctity of contracts is so important that Citigroup who got $45 Bn without a plan after causing this CDO/CDS scam, will still pay $20 Mn per year for 20 years to have their name on the new stadium in NYC and I have yet to hear one thing about any of those Wall Streeters selling any of their private jet fleets.
