Mish, I think we need a domestic auto industry that's more than a final assembly line for parts designed, managed, and largely made by foreign companies. For national security, if nothing else, we need this domestic large scale production capability, including design and management experience. In an emergency, it can be redirected to other needs.

What if "the big one" happens in California and we need to rebuild the west coast? The US needs an industrial base, and that's more than some Toyota and Honda plants doing the simple stuff while the real know how develops in Japan.

It might be better to push hard to get the domestic auto industry to stand up to the unions, more. Killing off our domestic industrial base is not a good idea.
