Ted,

re: "Because unions are a bigger problem than the management, and they are an easier problem to solve."

Show me how you've come to that conclusion. And why are they easier?

Because it is simple arithmetics, not even algebra. Even you can figure that out. Take away perks that rise your costs per hour to $73 / hour, cut it down to $20s, and, voila, you reduced your labor costs by 60%. It can be done in the bankruptcy cost. And, BTW, those new position will still be extremely attractive positions.

re: "I don't give them a pass. I just recognize that management problems are harder and take longer to fix."

Why?

Let me give you one reason: I just showed you above how to solve GM's biggest problem (crushing labor cost). It took a couple of sentences. With management, we don't even know what the problems are currently.

Let me give you an example. Suppose you take a 400lb guy and you want to make him into a gymnast. At 400lb, he can't do anything, you don't even know what he is capable of. You will start to see his talents or lack of talent, capabilities, mistakes when he is down to below 200lb.
