What do the euros do when building cars in-country? Do they have unions? If so, is it that their unions are less aggressive or that they make higher end cars. Anyone know??

As far as I can tell, their unions are more aggressive. My friend works for Audi and the unions drive him nuts. Sometimes he will have to leave his office and go to the union floor to resolve a problem with the union boss and some supervisor and that's not even in his job description. The problems sound very minor to me.....at least.

Europe has a more socialistic society, so at least the health care of the workers are paid for by the state. Yes, they also make higher-end cars, at least for the American market. Most of the cars sold in Europe are tiny gas-sippers because of (a) smaller streets, and (b) high costs at the pump.

"Do they have unions?"

Much more so than here.

michael,

What do the euros do when building cars in-country?

They have unions, and we will see how many of the Western Europe plants will do in the current downturn. They build new assembly plants in Eastern Europe, which is more business friendly, costs are relatively low and unions are cooperative.

I think the problem for many plants in Western Europe is that they are comparatively older, already depreciated, and if you need to downsize, do you close an old unprofitable plant with high labor cost in Western Europe or state of the art brand new, very profitable plant in Eastern Europe?
