Brazil's to triple ethanol production up to 2020, says Petrobras

RIO - Brazil's ethanol production is expected to triple until 2020. Alan Kardec Pinto, president of Petrobras Biofuel, divulged this information during his lecture in the "Biofuels - the Energy for the 21st Century" Seminar, promoted by Infoglobo on Copacabana Palace Hotel, this Monday.

According to the executive, production is expected to increase from the present 25 billion liters per year to around 70 billion liters per year in 2020. This production increase expectation includes the new cellulose ethanol technology, which makes possible to take advantage of sugar cane's bagasse cellulose, or other plants cellulose, to produce fuel.

According to Kardec, Brazil must be ready to use cellulose ethanol technology in commercial scale up to 2015, in order to keep up with countries such as United States and Canada, which are also investing on such researches. Kardec believes that the cellulose ethanol technology shall triple ethanol productivity per cultivated hectare.

Kardec also reminded that Petrobras investments in the biofuel area during the next five years, according to the previous plan, are expected to reach 1.5 billion dollars, but this figure is subject to change according to the ongoing revision of the company's business plan. Petrobras' board of directors shall have a meeting in December, 19th in order to approve the new Plan.
