Truth is i dont think US manufactures have enough green cars. In order to go green, we might have to incent carbon one more time. Give the incentive for car purchase for all cars but require auto companies to discontinue gas guzzlers and go green. I dont think we can force consumers into a bidding war for limited fleet of green cars.

I say loan them whatever they need. Give a sliding government rebate to the consumer based on MPG, and use the same sliding amount to the (domestic only) auto makers that would be applied to retire their government debt.

Then start preaching to the consumer that it's the "patriotic duty" to get the country off imported oil, and put that money to work in this country. A Manhattan project. Save the auto industry and stimulate the economy.
