How is it different if the members of grossly overpaid unions agree to take substantial paycuts versus the government handing over MY tax dollars to prop them up? You're actually asking that question?

>>> Do you know for sure that the economy can withstand a collapse or even a severe contraction of the domestic auto industry? With talk of severe recession or even depression, are you willing to gamble for $35B when financial institutions have been given 20 times that much?

I don't like the financial institution bailouts, either. But I can at least see how there is the possibility that it will prevent a total meltdown.

All giving the automakers does is puts off the inevitable for a few months, unless the UAW is broken in the process.

This is the opportunity for the automakers to take back control of their business from the extortionists known as the UAW. I don't blame a CEO for not wanting a bankruptcy on his resume. And the UAW knows damned well they get slaughtered in a bankruptcy, so THEY don't want it. Government has an opportunity to use this cash as a bargaining chip to break the unions that are breaking our country. They should do it and they should drive the hardest of bargains. Not that I think they will.

Al,

How is that different than unions making significant concessions?

Because you can't believe the word unions say (promise), unless it is on paper (contract). Otherwise, UAW will see the money, reneg on promises, and continue to be leaches they are.
