Part of his problem is that he as a difficult time hearing even with twin hearing aids. Even I have had a difficult time hearing my daughter unless there is no background noise.

I was definitely raised in the era when "children are to be seen and not heard" lost the battle. He knows that they will not stand to be lectured. I remember spending a Thanksgiving around a five year old step nephew. I remember thinking my father was being too hard on him for being a five year old boy. FWIW he now thinks the same boy is a wonderful college kid.

His father was gregarious with his grandchildren and I suspect this trait has skipped generations.

It is a shame because he is very respected in many circles. My children never met their paternal grandmother. They have lost the connection to a wonderful generation.
