Re: "So its the exact opposite of what you've been saying all along"

Not quite, Tim.

You must be confusing *my words* with the *newspaper's words*.

I posted a mass-media published newspaper article.

THEY (in *their headline*!) said "It's official"... not me.

If I had taken it upon myself to EDIT the words in the newspaper you would be calling me a liar - saying I phonied-up newspaper articles. (So I don't go around 'correcting' by re-editing newspaper articles on the sly. <g>)

But what I did was CLEARLY point out that N.B.E.R. is, and always has been!, a COMPLETELY PRIVATE ORGANIZATION.

Since the US government now (along with most economists and, obviously, media outlets) have taken to calling the N.B.E.R. recession dating the closest thing to an official dating call for recessions that we have in this country... I take it that there is little actual confusion about the point.

A) they are private (& everyone knows it).

B) the government defers to their timing in these matters. (For the *excellent* reason that I gave previously: all around the world no one in their RIGHT MINDS would ever TRUST some government to issue honest calls in such matters, as they might reflect very BADLY on the governments.)

That is why folks turn to a non-partisan professional association of notable economists, academics and statisticians for this....
