I think they should not demand credit for booms - and not act as if it is their direct job to fix busts. The government's involvement in the economy should be kept to a bare minimum. Their job should be to maintain a legal society which would be an attractive place for people to conduct business.

What's the common denominator between the politician's "involvement" in the economy on the way up - and then, their attempts to abort busts which they in part helped create? Answer - government meddling.
