Bingo on the first part... it's an illness in our culture.

The spin I put on it for myself is that, given whatever resources I need when I retire, I'd rather do it sooner than later.

So I'm delaying gratification I suppose, and in looking around, I'm avoiding one heck of a lot of waste by not involving my ego in my spending nearly so much as the vast majority of Americans. Better for the environment, no need for a storage locker of overflow purchases, interest paid to me instead of the bank.

I've yet to pay off my mortgage though, so not quite there yet.
