The Million Dollar Highway in CO is one of the most beautiful places I've seen..

I totally agree! I had the good fortune of living on the southern end of that drive many years ago. I lived in Durango and helped with the start up of the Purgatory Ski Area. Long time ago, but we would drive to Silverton many times just for "something to do".

It really is hard to decide just which road we've traveled is most beautiful. I too traveled across country by car, and have to say the the middle section wasn't very pretty. Like you, we did the East coast from NJ up to Maine. It was winter time, so not that scenic........mostly black and white.

Also did the entire coast of Florida from St Augustine to Key West in 2007. Now THAT was pretty.

One of our dreams is to do what you describe. Take about 3 months and travel across country starting here in August going east across northern U.S. ending by coming back through the south in Oct. We plan on mostly camping, but will certainly hit a hotel once in awhile for a nice break.
