Ambinder does a good job of explaining the problem(s) the Republican Party faces. When a guy like Michael Steele, (well-spoken, intelligent, experienced former lieutenant governor of Maryland...and a minority!)is considered by some of the "base" to be unacceptable for a high party position because he is deemed too soft on abortion (despite his claims otherwise), well, there is no easy direction for that party to move.

Steele may not be the best candidate, or the right candidate...but he is felt by some to be completely unacceptable because of concerns over his views on that one issue...

Smaller Government, less regulation and less intrusion of government into our private lives is still a valid platform. But it may be some other party than republican that is capable of espousing it in 2012 or thereafter....
