Well Tesla is claiming a useful life of around 100,000 miles for the battery pack. At that time they expect the battery pack to be able retain roughly 80% of it's total capacity compared to when it was new. The software in the car's computer constantly measures how many miles were driven to the second and measures the power output of the motor and many other parameters so the software can develop a "table" of capacity that is constantly tweeked each time the car goes through a discharge, charge cycle. It is actually easy to do and this technique has been done with battery measurement equipment for many years.
