It's common with upper middle class retirees. They take out loans to buy nice big retirement homes in the Sun Belt, expecting to pay the mortgage out of their IRA distributions. The extra bedrooms are used for an office, craft room, exercise room, visiting relatives, etc. They think they're almost as rich as Croesus, and then the hammer falls in the form of financial and health problems. I've watched this scenario play out several times with family and friends.
