that may be, that that 800 billion would be spent here on energy.

But that is a net gain of 800 billion on the US economy. People in the US that are working on rigs or what have you get paid, companies here provide these services and create wealth, as opposed to 800 billion US dollars that leave here and go to the middle east where their corporate leaders get the money.

Very clever of you to clarify that the real, underlying, truly fundamental point of the post had to do with balance of payments, and not health care at all.

I was just trying to use healthcare of an example of the massive wealth that leaves every year for oil. 800 billion is such a huge amt all I can think of is healthcare. Its a huge drain and there isn't any real reason for it other than entrenched interests.

The fact that somebody (not you) would respond regarding an 800 billion offshore purchase made yearly with an assumption that there is no benefit to the US to keep that money here unless we can provide the same fossil fuel products at the same price is really naive, come on. If there was a way to bring some of the manufacturing home that we have lost over the years to china... I don't know flat screen tvs or something.. this nation would be awash with wealth at least for some time, even if those TVs cost more to produce here. Our entire problem is this trade deficit. Other nations don't allow it, we on the other hand are giving our economy away.
