Yes, they had them, but IBM didn't have to let him keep them. They had the ability to cut a deal then and there that would have STOPPED Gates from having those rights. And you know it. It is agreed by almost everyone that this agreement is what propelled MSFT to its future highs. If you disagree with it, I don't want to discuss it.

Gates outsmarted the marketing geniuses (that would include Al, I suppose) at IBM; had he not done so, MSFT would have relegated to its then-current status of rinky-dink fledgling software company and IBM would have had a corner on the market for a long time to come.
