Obviously the context for "nothing is official" in my post, was not "all possible things", but "measurements of unemployment rates.

there are PERFECTLY VALID REASONS why no one in their right mind, anywhere in the world, would ever trust a government to be honest in such a determination.

If you trust the NBER determinations you still have to trust the government since their determination relies, at least in part, on government statistics.

The main problem with government definitions is changes in the definition, but the NBER also changes their definitions (but at least hopefully for better reasons).
