As just for the record, I would not consider Truman a great president although some do. Nonetheless, Bush would lucky to end up being viewed by history as another Truman.

Perhaps. I would suggest he is in that same category. Not a Reagan, not a Roosevelt. But in the top quartile. He has floundered significantly in his second term in my eyes.

Bush's political courage will be remembered by history. That he was willing to stick with an unpopular war because he knew it was the best thing for the country is something many presidents can't find the courage for.

He kept the country safe when nobody thought he could. That, above all, is his legacy. Now, if there are no more terrorist attacks in this country, that may turn out to not look like a big deal. But if we go down the road a ways and there is another big attack, the question people will ask is "Where is GWB when we need him?"
