They wouldn't be taking on these powers if the private market leaders hadn't failed so badly by mismanaging risk at obscene levels purely for personal gain. This is a by-default slide into a larger government role in the economy that few wanted before.

It will take a few years for this cycle to play out. It's now up to Wall Street and Detroit and the rest of America's CEOs to prove that they can manage and innovate and prosper again, this time on a sound footing.
