This was last month.seattlepi.nwsource.com Suspect in mall shooting arrested Portland police bust Saunders after a tip from officers here By CASEY MCNERTHNEY AND JON NAITO P-I REPORTERS TUKWILA -- The suspect charged with murder and assault in the Saturday shootings in Westfield Southcenter mall was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Portland. Police said Barry L. Saunders Jr., 21, had been identified by witnesses and security camera footage and had been on the run since Saturday, the day he allegedly escaped from Southcenter after nearly 80 officers responded and placed the Tukwila mall on lockdown. Barry L. Saunders Jr. Tukwila Police Department spokesman Mike Murphy said Portland police arrested Saunders about noon Wednesday. By 2 p.m., they knew they had arrested the murder suspect. Tukwila detectives were quickly sent to Portland, Murphy said. Investigators expect to extradite Saunders to King County to face charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Officers from Tukwila police, working closely with members of the Seattle police gang unit, worked through the night Tuesday tracking leads, with the clues eventually leading them to conclude that Saunders was in Portland, Murphy said. They tipped off Portland police, and officers there located him. Saunders was taken into custody without incident, though he initially resisted telling officers his identity, Murphy said. Murphy said it was likely that Saunders fled south immediately after Saturday's shooting. He added that he did not know if the weapon used in the assault had been recovered. Saunders would likely be extradited sometime next week, Murphy said.Police believe Saunders is responsible for the death of 16-year-old Daiquan L. Jones, who was shot about 3:45 p.m. Saturday on the first floor of the busy shopping center. Another teenager, Jermaine D. McGowan, 16, was also shot. He was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center. Jones, who had been released from jail earlier this month, was affiliated with the 74 Hoovers gang. Police believe McGowan also has ties to the 74 Hoovers. Street sources told the Seattle P-I that Saunders was involved with two gangs -- the Low Profiles, described as a renegade group based in the Central District -- and 8 Block, a hybrid combining members from the Central District and South Seattle. Police had worried Saunders would be a victim of street justice. Some family members of the victims told a gang-intervention group the situation would get ugly. "With him off the street, it's the safest place for him," Murphy said at a news conference Wednesday. Investigators are still uncertain how Saunders wound up in Portland, he said. Police had several witnesses who identified Saunders, according to court documents. His arrest warrant was issued Tuesday -- the same day he was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault. Saunders, who has lived in Kent and Tukwila, is being held on $1 million bail.
