Beyond that I don't buy the "you can only own what you have access to" idea

This idea comes from Locke and other Enlightenment thinkers. Locke wrote that in the state of nature, property is created by mixing your labor with raw material. You can only own what you can effectively use, whether land or otherwise. But Locke has a little-commented on proviso - that all changes once we have currency. Once there is money, you can own the whole world.
