Al,

While you grand stand with your soap box posts it is hard to resist the urge to note that you are pretty narrow minded on this...labor cost is an issue, but to say that all you have to do is lower it and puff, all is magically well, is to miss the heart of Detroit's troubles.

It is certainly the biggest problem and fixing it will chop off up to $18B in annual cost.

The second biggest problem is the debt accumulated, a lot of it directly related to borrowing to pay the outrageous benefits. There is no quick fix to that issue.

Other problems are way down the line.

You can bring the UAW at the edge of the abyss and get concessions, but fixing a product portfolio and the company image that goes with it is a much harder problem to solve and one the UAW had very little to do with.

Those are longer term issues. They cannot be solved in a week. UAW issues can be solved in a week.

One way, I believe the government could help is to pay some or all of the R&D related to development of plug in hybrids. That's the long term issue for automakers and the country (to lessen dependency on imported oil). Big 3 competitors are getting similar R&D assistance from their governments...
