SUVs didn't exist but people wanted large vehicles.

Before SUVs people would have bought station wagons, or large sedans but they where disadvantaged by counting as cars in the CAFE regulations while SUVs counted as trucks.

And yes its a matter of fads and what's trendy as well, but while they are effected by marketing, that effect is unreliable and is far from total control.

SUVs got marketed as heavily as they did, because once they where available they where popular, and the car companies wanted to grab more market share in that popular segment.
