There's only one reason why he is doing this, and it's because he's speaking AS a conservative in a self-critical tone. Yet he has long since represented ANY conservative position.

How can you separate the two? ...he's pointing out attributes of the conservative movement as being less than positive and probably harmful to the party...that's all. He's not making a statement about all conservative or all liberal topics. He's simply saying that if Palin runs on divisive notions such as those she espoused during the campaign ("real" Virginians as an example!?), that the result is likely to be unpopular. Same with Rush...he appeals to the most cynical among us, spends his days in distortion and exaggeration...he's asking if that is what the republican party wants to be in the future as if to say rhetorically that moderates are likely to run away from it because it's not constructive.
