Re: TIAA/CREF real estate - By slowly re valuing thier properties, possibly as new leases are written, instead of marking to market, they can reduce the appearance volitility by a large amount.

Their are other ways to smooth gains. One would be geographic diversity. Another would be moving new leases to either before or after December 31. Adjusting the schedule for how debts are paid down would also help.

Two nasty things about Madoff - he seemed to have picked victims who tend to make large charitible contributions, and he also allowed many smaller investors to do place huge percentages of thier net worth with him.

Considering that there are more than a few people in the world spending their money on fast cars, hookers and blow, some of whom made their money is questionable ways, it appears he focused on the nicer, more virtuous people.

A real sh*t.
