The nomination comes as part of the unveiling of an environmental and energy policy team that reportedly also includes former EPA Administrator Carol Browner as the head of a new policy council to coordinate climate, environment and energy issues, as well as Energy Secretary nominee Steven Chu, and Nancy Sutley, deputy mayor of Los Angeles, as head of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. Much of the focus around this new team centers on the pick of Nobel laureate Chu. This diary concentrates on Lisa Jackson's background, asking the question: Can she be counted on to effectively lead an agency that has withstood eight years of hardship? During the Clinton administration (and continuing into the early years of the Bush Administration), my research was sponsored by the EPA, and I participated in forums run by the agency. The closing of the EPA libraries is but one of many Bush Administration decisions regarding the agency that has caused me great anguish over the past eight years. With that in mind, I was optimistic that a new administration would at least begin to right the wrongs done the past eight years.
