Can Nuclear Power Compete?
Newly approved reactor designs could reduce global warming and fossil-fuel dependence, but utilities are grappling with whether better nukes make market sense

But utilities are already signing long-term contracts for large solar generators, and wind turbines are being erected at an unprecedented rate. Those alternatives operate fewer hours of the year, but with no burden of fuel cost or fuel-disposal problems the price of power they produce could be low enough to squeeze nuclear power out of the mix.

Unfortunately we cannot "drill our way out" of the problem. What I find amazing is the decline rates in many fields around the world. We are all in for a massive shock in less than ten years I'm afraid. Using our energy more efficiently is the quickest way to buy some time as you pointed out until we can build out renewables.
