Ironically, these were the people who benefited most by the overthrow of Saddam......the Shia. Across much of the Arab world on Monday, the shoe-throwing incident generated front page headlines and continuing television news coverage. A thinly veiled glee could be discerned in much of the reporting, especially in the places where anti-American sentiment runs deepest. A thinly veiled glee could also be discerned amongst left-wing lunatics in the United States, as well as in most American news reporters. I am not sure what glee you are hearing. For me, its disgust. This is what we get for meddling in another country's affairs. But the fact is that the vast, vast majority of Iraqi citizens were offended by the action. You'd be hard-pressed to find any news coverage of THAT. But almost all Iraqis would agree that the behavior was totally inappropriate and the act should never have been carried out. Most Iraqis, in fact, recognize that they are far better off today than at any time in memory. And ALL know that if that nitwit had thrown a shoe at a visiting dignitary under Saddam he would have been executed before they could get him out of the room. The guy is being recognized as a hero throughout the Arab world. Even Iraqis who feel it was a rude thing to do to a guest agree with the sentiment behind it.Iraq is a much different place today as a result of Bush's determination, and pretty much everyone appreciates the new-found freedom. A very small minority are in the camp the shoe-thrower is in. I understand. There is no other way you can see it and still feel comfortable about Iraq. Never mind.
