Sony plant shutdowns unlikely to impact Japanese indium prices

Tokyo (Platts)--16Dec2008

Sony's plan to close five to six manufacturing plants in the next two
years to cope with the global economic slowdown is likely to have limited
impact on Japanese indium prices, local market sources said Tuesday.
The impact should be limited as Sony does not produce flat panel TVs in
Japan, sources said.
Indium is used for indium tin oxide films put on the displays.
In Japan, the company operates two cellular phone panel plants but
indium consumption for such small panels is limited as indium-based films have
been substituted mostly by zinc, according to trade sources.
Sony said last week that it planned to reduce its electronic appliance
manufacturing plants by 10% by the end of March 2010.
It currently operates 57 electronics plants including two cellular phone
panel plants in central Japan.
The company is also cutting more than 8,000 jobs as well as investments
by 30%.
