Cat Burglars always wear loafers or other slip on shoes, they do this in case they run into a dog. They take off the loafer and put it over their hand, when the dog attacks they ram the shoe down the dog's throat as far as they can, then slip their hand out. Some cuts and scraps but it does the dog in.

That might work. I know one time he got my foot and I slugged him about 2-3 times in the fact has hard as I could. He kind of backed up and shook it off and within a couple seconds was going after my other foot.

I think a weapon would be the best bet though. You'd have to be pretty quick to get him before he got you, anyway.
