Ian, Joe, and all: From this biased long-termer's perspective, it was another classic A.Z. conf call - the pregnant silences, highly curious yet speechless analysts (Brett Hodess manages "Wow") and A.Z. generally demonstrating that he's much farther along with Verdant (P-GILD) and Ultrabeam than any of those clowns ever anticipated.

Yes, he did emphasize an overcapacity situation in Thin Film, which he feels will be somewhat offset by orders for the poletrimming tool (MR and GMR back end) and new strength in the semiconductor businesses. I wonder how long it will take to prove to this thick-headed market that his product diversification is an ASSET.

The poletrimming tool (1800) accomplishes for .01/head what the alternatives do for about .11/head. In a viciously cost sensitive business like DD, this will be well received, to say the least.

Art has a stack of letters-of-intent & purchase orders for the poletrimming, Ultrabeam, and P-GILD tools. He stressed over and over that these new products are being well received by the industry.
(The mask making tool's ASP is, I believe, 6.8M. He confirmed that the specs exceed the competition.)

I found it very interesting that the market this morning seemed more concerned with the contents of the conf call (i.e. the future) than the specific numbers reported. The majority of the questions addressed Verdant, Ultrabeam, and MR.
