The idea that "oil independence" would mean US isolationism or disengagement from the world is a big assumption that you're making.

Not everyone makes that assumption.

So drilling + conservation + electric vehicles = 6 + 6 + 6 = 18. Voila. We're oil independent.

I may be wrong, but I think electric vehicles are going to have a very difficult time competing in this current marketplace, at least the current Lithium Ion battery powered ones.

Maybe Eestor will prove the veracity of their ultracapacitor and bring the cost down to a competitive level.

Conservation is also key, but it cannot be imposed by creating "floors" that undermine economic activity. Energy costs are as fundamental as labor in any economy.
