""Windows" is familiar, an "old friend" to lots of folks, with the typical MS-Office applications, but MS does not own the name "Windows", IIRC; think X-Window."

True. However, it is a decent shorthand for the Microsoft product. As presented at the moment, netbooks don't have to run Microsoft software. To access the Internet, Linux is fine. And there are several GUI's available, many operate much like the Redmond product.

In the case of Apple, well, they have their own OS. Plus pretty transparent support for multiple architectures.
