Much of our history is the struggle between indidualistic and collectivistic impulses. Global Warming is the modern vehicle of choice for the latter - it is something that would require us all to act together. It would require wise, pro-active governance, which would make politicians more relevant, important and... powerful.

Pro-Collectivists are not shy, and not very choosy. Right now, they are trying to use our economic problems against greedy pro-market individualists. They managed to bamboozle (maybe) most of the population into wanting more "regulation". There will be other issues to rally everyone around -- for as long as the society is in a collectivistic mode, for as long as the issue du jour "takes a village" - they have what they want.
