Not sure I agree that's what they did - and especially not for multi-socket. HT 3.0 is just around the corner, 6 core server chips probably this year, and glueless 8-socket HT is also on the near term roadmap.

What I saw AMD drop (or move out) is more consumer-oriented 'fusion' products, and I think that was a smart decision, especially if the research money is instead applied to improving the schedule for high end architecture. Advanced NUMA architecture and glueless 4-way, 8-way and beyond will help keep AMD in a strong position for large systems.
