As negotiations continue between the transition team of President-elect Barack Obama and Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, a senior Democratic aide said Friday that Obama aides and party leaders are now talking about a package costing between $650 billion and $750 billion. States are begging for money. Retailers and some small businesses have called for a payroll tax holiday to spur consumer spending. Democratic constituent groups have pushed for tax breaks aimed at low-income families and incentives to encourage industries from alternative fuels to road builders and telecommunications providers. “Lots of numbers all over the place because the package is not final yet,” said one top Democratic aide. Republicans reacted with concern to the mounting price tag, which has grown significantly from the $600 billion outline floated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi , D-Calif., in the last week. Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, said, “It is now being widely reported that the new administration plans to ask for up to $850 billion for a stimulus package in January. This figure would add a sizeable amount to the federal deficit, which is already projected to top $1 trillion dollars, driving us toward a potential deficit of $1.5 trillion for 2009.” Conservative Blue Dog Democrats in the House also are urging a smaller package to reduce the impact on the budget deficit, while liberals want to take advantage of their party’s new clout by pushing long-deferred program goals. Leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus called for a recovery package costing $1 trillion, saying that “anything much less than $1 trillion would be like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun.”cqpolitics.com
