I found that if I did not say "um" the person I was speaking to might repeat the question angrily or say "WELL?".

Stopping to think seems to many people a sign of indecisiveness.

So if you are a "decider" you don't say "um".

I don't think Obama or anyone else can do much to prevent the continuing decline of real estate prices--at least until the expansion of the money supply begins to decisively knock the props out from under the dollar. There's too much housing.

Dollar prices of houses may stabilize or even rise, but housing prices will not keep up with inflation for many years.

Obama is the best orator this country has had in 100 years......a few ums only makes his speaking more interesting IMO. ;-)

I think Obama's speechifyin' is just fine and very free of "ums". It's when he goes extemporaneous that the "ums" start to drop, like when he's asked a question.

I think he realizes the power his words can have, and want to be very careful with them. The "um" is a stall that lets him consider and choose his words. What he needs to do, is develop a stall that comes across better on TV.
