I'm not a chart guy. But, ASND vs. cisco is a funny comparison. It strikes me that I sense pleading and desparation from the asnd folks.

I can't necessarily even call short term trading swings. However, I am comfortable making bets on fundamentals. ASND may offer end to end solutions for ISPs or other WAN oriented customers, but the last I checked, ASND has almost no measurable presense in customer base or products at the core of enterprise networks. My understanding of end to end is that it encompasses both enterprise and wan infrastructure.

The really intersting thing is if csco can be successful supporting isochronous data transport over packet based networks. (isochronous = time dependant like voice and video) If they can, it opens cisco up to a market that allows their products to act as a backbone for voice traffic.

Although Digital networks appear to be much more expensive on an equipment basis, cisco's software will allow for such efficient use of a combined voice/video/data network that costs will actually decline.

If they are successful in this transition, cisco should be able to sustain its ridiculous rate of growth for another 4 to 10 years. I remember arguments about Microsoft being overpriced (which i think it's pretty close now) when it was $80 per share pre-split!

If CSCO can sustain north of 30% growth for the next 5 years, the stokc will behave quite well.

Now on to ascend. I'd bet the prospects for their partial solutions are waning. In fact, avoiding the stock issues, I'd bet hard dollars that cisco's revenue growth in calendar 1998 will exceed ascend's revenue growth in calendar 1998.

Any interested takers?
