One thing that could put a lid on gold prices for a couple of years would be a decision by the U. S. government to start selling gold. That would be a very good time to start or continue buying physical gold, but it might be discouraging for all the mining companies.

On the brighter side, from a gold-bug's view, that selling might not start until gold has already hit something like $1,500. But it seems more likely to me that there would be selling than that there would be any movement for the government to remonetize gold at several thousand dollars an ounce and buy gold.
