MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 1997--Lucent Technologies
today appointed two chief operating officers and created a series of
businesses to better focus on the industry's fastest growth
opportunities. The company's reorganization will focus it more clearly
on high growth areas such as wireless, semiconductors, data networking
and optical networking. These changes take effect November 1.
Richard McGinn, who was named Lucent Technologies chief executive
officer earlier this month, announced the appointment of two chief
operating officers to oversee the company's reorganization effort:
- Dan Stanzione, 51, has been appointed executive vice president and
chief operating officer. He will remain president of Bell Labs, Lucent's
research and development arm.
- Ben Verwaayen, 45, has been appointed executive vice president and
chief operating officer. He joined Lucent in September after being
president of the Dutch PTT and chairman of Unisource, a consortium of
European telecommunications companies and AT&T.
Stanzione and Verwaayen will jointly support the newly organized
businesses, with Stanzione having oversight of technology and product
architecture decisions, and Verwaayen taking the lead on globalization
efforts, an area with 70 percent of Lucent's growth opportunity. "Dan
led our Network Systems division to record growth in revenues and
earnings, and helped Bell Labs forge tighter links with the business.
Ben brings unparalleled knowledge of the global communications industry
to Lucent as well as the proven skill to create global partnerships,"
said Richard McGinn, CEO and president of Lucent Technologies. "Their
combined leadership and experience will allow us to maintain our
technological edge as we aggressively globalize the business." Lucent,
which formerly consisted of three business units - Microelectronics
Group, Business Communications Systems and Systems for Network Operators
- will be creating smaller businesses in order to better focus on
customers in high-growth markets. Lucent said that, in nearly all cases,
customers will continue to be served by the same sales and service
people who work with them now. The creation of several new businesses is
aimed at bringing new offerings in several high- growth markets to
customers as quickly as possible. "I've described Lucent as a group of
hot businesses, tightly focused on its customers, markets and
competitors," said McGinn. "Our reorganization is designed to provide
more focus to the business internally, while giving a single face to our
customers externally. We are organizing for growth."
