Abe Lincoln is a good example of how things go. If the South did not support slavery, we might not have as positive view of him. The moral argument in favor of a State's right to secede is powerful and stems from the ideas that led to the revolution. I do not think we have heard the end of this argument.

Abe Lincoln is not universally admired...unless you hold that absolute abuse of federal power is both necessary and a good thing.
